TNO

TNO, as a trusted, independent, and pioneering applied science and technology organisation, plays a multifaceted role. We innovate, investigate, and orchestrate, collaborating closely with governments, universities and the private sector. We inform government on policies and empower evidence-based decision-making through rigorous investigations, cutting-edge scientific insights, and reliable measurements. By building national and international consortia and ecosystems, we drive technological and methodological breakthroughs that help to realise a secure, sustainable, healthy, and digital society, and strengthen the earning power of the Dutch economy.

TNO is accelerating the energy transition together with knowledge partners, energy sector, companies and government for a CO2-neutral Netherlands in 2050. We innovate with hybrid energy systems, design future energy hubs and are pioneers in hydrogen technology.
Energy research at TNO is concentrated at the Energy- and Materials Transition Unit, where some 1000 researchers, consultants, project leaders and support work together on challenges regarding the energy transition, the materials transition and the coherence between these interrelated transitions.
Our research topics are focussed in the following divisions:
– Geological Survey of the Netherlands is responsible for the statutory task of the Geological Survey as well as R&D towards subsurface energy in broad perspective (geo-energy, ground water, raw materials and futureproof land-use).
– Energy Supply contributes to the realisation of a climate-neutral, reliable and affordable energy system with R&D on offshore wind energy, solar energy (devices, modules and applications) and the energy system transformation.
– Industry works on achieving a CO2-neutral and circular industry with R&D-topics on (sustainable) energy/electricity for industry, feedstock conversion, sustainable materials and molecular infrastructure.
– System Solutions & Environment – this division enables effective policy and behavioral change with research on net zero energy solutions, behavioural & societal transition, sustainability & circularity transition pathways and climate & air quality.
– TNO Vector aims aims to accelerate the socio-economic embedding of innovations in different sectors, including the energy sector. R&D includes topics like legislation, orchestrating innovations and business modelling.\
